Structuring Content

Structuring Content for a CMS

Here’s some advice on how to start thinking about structuring and organising your website content.

A ‘Content Management System’, is about organising your website content. This means you have to think about your website in terms of the content structure, rather than the end result (the web pages). The actual‘look and feel’, or theme of your website is completely separate from the content – the colours, fonts, alignment, positioning, etc. are all governed by the template you apply rather than being built-in to your content.

CMS Content StructureThus, by assigning a different template to your website, you can give it a completely different look and feel without having to amend any of the content.

We are take care of the template, so that leaves you to concentrate on the content for your website.

Your content should be organised into sections and categories:

  • Sections are containers that hold one or more Categories.
  • Categories are containers that hold one or more Content Items.
  • Content Items are the articles that make up your actual website content.

So you can think of your website as an entire filing cabinet.

  • Website (Filing Cabinet)
  • Section (Drawer)
  • Category (Folder in the Drawer)
  • Article (Single page in the Folder)

Of course when we receive your content, we will read it thoroughly and advise you on edits where we fell you will benefit the most for SEO purposes. Remember, content is king. The more unique quality content you have the more the search engines and your customers will appreciate you.
